Spiney Mole Crab

Satellite beach, mid morning, incoming tide.

I found sand fleas everywhere, good size ones too. Fished em for a few hours with very few bites. Reeled in one catfish. While showing the kids how to find fleas, I found this guy mixed in with them. I had never seen one before, and a little research showed that they are common on the pacific coast, and they get pretty big.

After some pics, I put him on a hook, and threw him out. Almost instantly, it got slammed so hard that it almost jerked the rod out of my hand. It took some line, and then the fish was gone. Needless to say, I spent the rest of the time looking for more... with no luck.

Have any of you ever fished with Spiney Mole Crabs around here?

Is there a trick to finding them?

Thx

I've seen them before, but like you said, my understanding is that they're not here on purpose.

Looks like they call em Sand Crabs on the west coast. I'd love to know more about them.
